Day1 20/05/13

Today, my group went to CleanTech Park and saw lots of environmental-friendly designs. The first second I saw the CleanTech One building, I was impressed by its green fa├žade. It did give me a very good impression that the JTC is trying its best to save energy by maximizing the use of energy, recycling and reduce the unnecessary energy consumption. I could not wait to hear the introduction about the designs, especially the part related to our project: PDV.

I took some notes while briefing and sightseeing. I dared to say that almost every design has its meaning and purpose. The building is short at the east and west sides but long at the other two sides. This design reduces solar energy and heat, as well as reduces the energy consumption to cool the environment. In the middle hollow zone, natural ventilation is achieved and the string plants over the hollow zone effectively absorb some heat and block some light. The glass and boards at the corridors can help to reflect light as well as prevent rain from wetting the corridors. The double volume floor contains fans and benches and allows staffs to rest and enjoy the view.

In an office, the chilled ceiling system is applied. Because of this application, the temperature at the ceiling is uniform and thus ensures everyone in the office to feel comfortable. It is a pity that we did not see our PDV system been used. However, I am quite confident about the efficiency of our system and I am sure that it will be installed in some offices in the future.

I am quite satisfied with this journey because the new designs widen my view as well as enrich my knowledge. I am looking forward to the other two learning journey at One-North and Jurong island.

Day3 22/05/13

Today we went to One-North to continue our learning journey. First we visited the One-north gallery and know about the One-north district. Then we went to Biopolis, which contains 7 buildings. The cooling system and waste conveyance system are advanced. Water is cooled at night when the cost of electricity is relatively low and delivered to different buildings through pipes. The cool water is used to cool the whole building and return to where it from at night. However, in my opinion the system only reduces the cost but never save energy. I think it is a good idea to save money but the designer should try to save energy as well. The waste conveyance system used the difference in air pressure to deliver rubbish. The garbage gathers at a large place under one of the buildings from different buildings through pipes as well. I think that the rubbish is easily stuck in the pipes if once the air pressure is not big enough. This situation will cause unnecessary work and inconvenience.

However, they are still good ideas because it is not easy to run such a large place and we cannot work out other better ideas. I learned how to manage more than 1 building at the same time. When our PDV system applied in our daily life, we must know how to manage all the systems in one building. We must look at the big picture as well as small details.

Day4 23/05/13

Today, we finally met our external mentor Mr Loh. We went to the Jurong island and did some sightseeing of the JTC industry area. Along the way, we asked Mr Loh lots of prepared questions and I was satisfied with his answers. Based on that, I got a deeper understand of our system and thus we discovered some disadvantages of the system and knew our direction to improve it.

We first went into the JTC summit and met Mr Loh. He and his colleagues gave us a short video briefing about some of the projects the JTC is now doing. I saw some familiar place such as CleanTech Park and Biopilis at One-North as we went there on Monday and Wednesday respectively. I watched the video carefully, and tried to recall and understand the physics principles behind the designs.

Then we went to the Jurong island following the introduction of Mr Loh. We went into the Jurong chemgallery. We saw some models of some large devices on the Jurong island and knew how it works. For example, there is a large room under the seabed to store chemical materials. This device provides enough space to store them and the sea above it can still allow ships to come in the port to transport. I also knew how the island developed, how people use the island and how people reclaimed land for use.

We asked lots of questions along the way to the island and the way back. I finally fully understood the layout of the system. For example, the cooling coil used chilled water to maintain its working and the circuit above it is water pipes. Before this journey I always thought the circuit is an electricity circuit. Mr Loh also confirmed some of the disadvantages the system may have. For example, the temperature in the room may not be uniform. The part near the PDV system is comparably cold while the effect of the system near the part near the door may be very weak.

After the discussion within our group, we decided to make a model of the system and its application in a room as the real system will not be installed until July. We must plan in details and pay our effort in it. Experiment is an essential way of science research. And we want to prove some of our assumptions by doing experiments in our model. This is challenging but nay be very interesting.

I felt that after today we are clear about our system and thus can try our best to improve the system. I believe we can finish our project successfully!

Throughout the three journeys to JTC, I think the CleanTech Park journey is the most interesting as I saw the most creations and designs. I have to say that it impressed me the most. The green appearance attracted me at once when I saw it. Located in the suburb, the CleanTech One building is like a hut in a forest. The designers tried their best to let the building close to the nature and provide the employers a comfortable working environment. It really gave me a good impression.

Because of the satisfied environment, I started to think about being an engineer in JTC. I like science and like to apply it into our daily life. I believe that if I become an engineer in JTC, I can use my knowledge and creativity to contribute the company and the society. Hence, from now on, I have to work hard and be passionate about engineering. Thanks for JTC, especially our external mentor Mr Loh, we can have the chance to use our contexture knowledge to our life and be creative.
