Our Journey

Day 1: Introduction to Paper Prototyping & Setting of Game Premise

On 11/11/13, 2 students from HCI attended a rapid digital prototyping workshop hosted by SUTD-GAMBIT Lab in HCI during the annual HCI Engineering Week. During the 1st day of the workshop, they first played some games with the staff to break the ice. Later, they were taught about what was essential about a game: Goal, Interactions and Rules. They analysed various games by determining its goal, mechanism(interaction+rules), theme, format(single player/multi-player ; competitive/collaborative) and random elements within the game. Then, they went deeper into the concept of games by looking at how games could be described with simple verb and nouns. They then decided on their premise by selecting random verbs and nouns to form sentences, which was "A running Mexican who eats tacos and wears sombreros. When he flips chairs, unicorns fall from the sky.".

Day 2: Paper Prototyping of Game Ideas

On the second day, the boys came back to the workshop to materialise their ideas in the form of a paper prototype. After several rounds of brainstorming and discussion, they listed down several possible game ideas and finally decided on one which they felt would be the most fun. After a hard day of work, they finally made a playable paper prototype of their game idea, but something seemed to be missing...

Day 3, 4, 5: Refinement of Paper Prototype

During the rest of the week, the boys took their paper prototype out for playtesting. Through feedback given by the various playtesters, the boys realised that their game was very flawed and tried to tweak with various objects and mechanisms in game in order to balance it. After multiple rounds of playtesting and rebalancing, the boys finally arrived at a paper prototype which seemed both fun and balanced at the same time.

Day 6: Game Maker Crash Course

During the 6th day of the course, the boys were given a crash course on how to use Game Maker. They then coded a game based off the game Asteroid and were told that they could add or edit any function inside their game if they deemed it necessary using the knowledge they learned during the day.

Day 7: Show & Tell + Digital Prototype

On the 7th day, the boys presented their version of the Asteroid game they made yesterday while explaining how they tweaked the game and the rationale behind doing so. After that, they went on to work on the digital version of the paper prototype that they settled on during the previous week.

Day 8: Refinement of Digital Prototype

The boys found themselves in trouble on the 8th day when Guan Hong's laptop crashed due to a problem. Since the game files inside his computer could not be recovered, the boys had to redo everything that they had accomplished yesterday, including implementing codes and drawing the background and other in-game sprites. They learnt from this to constantly have backups available both online using Dropbox and offline so that even when one of their computers crashed, a backup was available either in their shared Dropbox folder or in the other person's laptop. After working all morning, they finally produced a playable version of the game. Some playtesters came in after lunch, and they provided valuable feedback to the boys on how the game could be improved. After refining the game during the afternoon, the boys shared the game with their friends for more feedback on their game.

Day 9: Refinement of Digital Prototype

The boys continued working on their prototype, adding both visual and audio feedback for events occuring in-game so that the player could be more aware of what was happening in the game. There was also more playtesting that happened which helped the boys improve the game even further.

Day 10: Completion of Digital Prototype + Showcase

On the final day, the boys polished their prototype by adding pause and mute buttons and published the game as a single executable file. They proceeded to showcase their final product to two batches of student playtesters and collected feedback from them. They also adjusted the game based on the responses of the students during gameplay. After that, they had a brief de-brief session before they officially ended their 10 day journey
